Robert Parker (94+)
This wine shows an impressive level of depth and layering. The 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva (90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in oak for 14 months) is more austere and elegant compared to the lower-end 2014 Chianti Classico. This, of course, was a very different vintage with many more positive attributes to put on display. The wine shows balanced power and elegance. There is a tangy, raw nature to the fruit but it is also very well concentrated and carefully enriched. It should evolve smoothly over the next ten years. 2017 - 2028
Renzo Marinai is an organic farm located in the prized Conca d'Oro sub zone of Panzano, at the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation. Janmario Hero Reina tells me that 2014 was a very cold year and only the base Chianti Classico was produced. The 2015 vintage was exceptional both in terms of quality and generous quantity. The 2016 vintage started off with lower than average temperatures and lots of rain in the spring months. The summer was dry and hot, resulting in small clusters and excellent concentration of aromas and flavors.
